Renewal

Ollie and I had the opportunity to take part in an amazing conference earlier this year called Renewing Hope: Pathways of Religious Environmentalism. It was an amazing gathering of eco-theologians, religious scholars, grassroots religious environmentalists...and Ollie. This is Ollie at one of the many planning meetings he attended leading up to the conference. He was always a good sport and here, is modeling the conference t-shirts for everyone. The conference took place during the last weekend of February. I recently received these photos, though, from friends...so wanted to post them!

I made this shirt for Ollie by cutting up the adult-sized shirt pictured above and stitching it into a little Ollie-sized pullover. He was a little symbol of hope for everyone at the conference. Here, he is taking a break from his ushering duties to look out a window and pose for our friend, Matt.

The smallest (and coolest) member of the "event staff" team.

Ollie and Mama taking a break from helping to set up the Interfaith Eco-service in Marquand Chapel. Ollie had a special role during the service, walking a pitcher of water down an aisle while Paul Winter played music. Ollie did a great job.

Checking out the chairs before people arrive.

For anyone who's interested, streamed video of parts of the conference, including Sallie McFague's lecture, are available at: www.yale.edu/divinity/video/index.shtml

Couldn't help but add another butter video! This one is from mid-April.

Olliesitter

This is Ollie's reading chair. Our little scholar!

Ollie loves to play in the refrigerator while Mama or Daddy makes dinner. He especially likes to pull out the fruit and vegetable drawers so there's more room for him to sit on the refrigerator floor.

We love to shoot video of Ollie "sitting" on things. We think it's so cute how he backs up and positions himself so carefully. Here, he's sitting on a music box that my grandma and grandpa gave me when I was a little girl. When he's not sitting on it, Ollie likes to play with the little ballerina on the inside.

Ollie sitting on his school bus.

Ollie LOVES butter!

***the latest: Ollie's taken up playing the harmonica. His favorite tune...the diaper-changin' blues. We've been letting him take it to bed with him, as it's been a struggle to pry it from his little, chubby fingers. He's fallen asleep playing it the past two nights. I really want to get a recording...it's SO cute!

Window Watcher

Our little climber loves looking out our front windows. He comments on everything he sees...from whether or not the sprinklers across the street are on, to babies in strollers, to what's driving by: bikes, cars, trucks, taxis, busses, tractors, fire trucks, police cars ("see cars") or ambulances. We always know what's going on outside!
Don't worry...one of us is always nearby. You can make out Daddy's fingers on the left side of the frame. (just in case ollie needs help getting back down!) Which reminds me...Ollie's started this funny habit of adding "s" to the end of words. For example, whenever he needs help these days, instead of, "help," he says, "helps, please." too funny. new words: artichoke (which is hilarious to hear him say!), avocado (can you tell Daddy's a chef?), kites, rainbow. he's also very polite. Yesterday, we were leaving a toy store when we heard from the back seat of the car, "More toy store. Play with toys, please." Unfortunately for Ollie, we did not turn the car around to go back.
Yesterday's breakfast:
I give Ollie his cereal and juice...and start to eat mine when I hear, "Fold your hands." Guess who forgot to say the breakfast prayer?
Then, I pull out the "surprise" from the box of cereal...a super cool indiana jones light-up spoon. As I'm struggling to unwrap it, I hear, "Open it, please." Apparently, I wasn't fast enough. Upon seeing the spoon, Ollie asks, "What's that?" I show him it's a spoon and that I can make it light up when I eat with it. Then, I give him a bite of his cereal with the "new spoon." He says, "Ha ha! Funny! Mouthful!" What a silly boy.

Family Play Day

Ollie loves to play outside, run around in open spaces, go exploring, people-watch, and hang out with his super cool Daddy and Mama. An afternoon on campus is the perfect time & place for all of this! Ohhh...I forgot to mention drumming on Daddy's head...another favorite Ollie pasttime.

Our little guy...gettin' some distance between him and his folks.

On a mission to climb the benches.

Success!

Aunt Jennifer made Ollie's cool hat--which is the perfect size for Ollie to put on by himself. Thanks, Aunt Jenn!

***Latest Ollie developments: phrases like "play with," "take this," "climb up," and "switch sides." Words that make him giggle like CRAZY: bummer, puke, and "good grief." Today's obsession: boots and puddles. New playground feat: climbing the rung ladders. "Good grief," I'm not ready for this! Ollie also has a new baby doll. He picked her out, himself, and named her Celia. We're not sure where he got that name from, as we don't know any Celia's. What a funny guy! But, he LOVES Celia...bringing her to many unusual places and giving her lots of hugs and kisses...and making sure we give her hugs and kisses, too.

Happy Easter, Ollie!

Yes...I'm still behind on posting pics!!!
The Easter Bunny left Ollie a basket of cheerio-filled eggs and a little rabbit. Ollie was pretty curious about his morning discovery.

Ollie & Mama on their way to church. During the service on Easter morning, Ollie shouted "money! money! money!" when he saw the offering plates. After the service, the pastor suggested Ollie introduce the offertory each Sunday with his special offering "call." What a silly little guy!

The whole gang tries to squeeze in for a pic!

Ollie & his Easter eggs.

Ooh...Ollie found the egg with the banana cookie inside!

Baby Ollie

Our friend, Jennifer, recently sent me these pics. They're from a cook-out when Ollie was just nine months old. It's amazing to me how much he has grown and changed in the eight months following these photos! This is Ollie and Jennifer.

Ollie & Mama

As I'm struggling to survive finals (one more paper to go!!!!), my weary mind gets more sentimental than usual. Seeing these photos of my little boy put me in a reflective mood, and I find myself going "back to the beginning." If you're not in the mood for sentimentality...skip my Mama ramblings...and enjoy the pics. :)

While I cannot determine a specific date on which my relationship with Ollie began (I sometimes feel as though there never was an origin and that we have always been connected, in some way. Perhaps, this is what some refer to as "the glimmer in the eye."), I remember clearly the week I knew definitively that I was pregnant. The week began with a brazen invitation--maybe, even a dare to the unknown. I cut off all of my hair in a "bring-it-on" type gesture to life. My entire life up until that point, I had had long locks--a sign of my discomfort with change and the unknown, perhaps. But, one morning, I woke up and thought, "This is it. Life is gonna happen whether I'm ready for it, or not. So, bring it on. Bring on the change. Bring on the mystery. Bring on the unknown. I can take it." I stopped by a salon on my way to work and asked for the shortest pixie cut they could give me. It was exhilarating, and I survived. Bring it on, Life.

The next afternoon, I received an acceptance letter in the mail regarding graduate school. Wow. Life was taking my invitation to the unknown seriously. This would mean changes. It had been years since I had been in an academic setting. Would I have what it takes? Was I setting myself up for failure? Had someone made a mistake in admitting me? In addition, I'm a Midwestern girl. How would my husband and I fare on the East Coast? Was I really prepared to ask him to leave his home, his family, and a career and reputation for which he had worked so hard--for me? Would we be able to face this unknown together? Alright, Life. I can do this. We can do this. How exciting! What an adventure! Bring it on, Life.

Life doesn't fool around with open invitations and brazen dares. The next morning, after about a week of not feeling well, I took a pregnancy test. Alright Life, you've got to be kidding me. This is a joke, right? Maybe you misunderstood. I guess I was thinking one unknown guest would arrive, stay for a while, and we would get comfortable with one another before another guest came a-knocking. But now, I had a guest who had entered unaware and taken up long-term residence. I always knew I would be ready for this...someday. With names like mine (and the biblical figures that share them), I used to joke that "someday" would be when I was in my nineties. Was this really someday? I was overcome with uncertainty, bewilderment, and even fear. How was I going to be able to move across country--away from home and loved ones, prove myself at a competitive and venerated institution, and give birth, become a mother, and care for another human being who would be so vulnerable and so dependent upon me?

As I face the doubts and unknowns of finals, I am reprocessing much of what I experienced that week and the next many months. I thought I was ready for the unknown; however, when it arrived, I was overcome with doubt and trepidation. But, Life rolled on. My husband and I lived into Life; we lived into the unknown. We left our home, moved across country. He found a job in a well-respected French restaurant; I immersed myself in the exhilerating world of academia. And...we rejoiced and prepared, as best we could, for our biggest unknown--the arrival of Ollie.

He was born just before finals fall semester. Each day with him is another day of inviting the unknown to sit at my table, to enter my home and my heart. Facing the unknowns in learning to care for Ollie is like staring at a "Magic Eye" picture. The more I try to concentrate, focus, figure everything out, the less I am able to see. As soon as I allow my eyes to relax, I am granted a moment of clarity when the outline of the image takes form. I do not know what tomorrow will hold--if I will live up to my role as Ollie's mother and caregiver. But, I have hope. And I know that I am capable of breathing, letting go, and living into the unknown--into the unknown with hope. Bring it on, Life!

Aunt Jennifer came for a visit this spring. We LOVED it and wish she could have stayed much longer! We miss her soooooo much! And, we can't wait to see her, Uncle D.R., and the boys (and her new baby) this summer!

Still Playing Catch-Up

Stare-down with Daddy.

Ollie and Daddy watching "hockey" together. (While they actually were watching hockey in this pic, Ollie calls any team sport on television "hockey." Love it.)

These videos are from early March when Ollie learned the word "deal." Right now, it's one of the only ways we can convince him to do things he doesn't want to do...like diaper changes. If we say, "First diaper, then playground," Ollie usually goes for the deal. He's also started making his own deals. They usually go something like this, "Cookies? K? (okay) Deal!" Of course, he's not too understanding when we say, "No deal." haha

More deals.

Dear Ollie

A professor sent me a card with this picture as it made her think of Ollie and me. I love it for that reason. It reminds me of putting Ollie down for his nap. He winds himself down by pressing his cheek against mine while I hold him, gradually pushing my head to the side, using my cheek as a pillow as he begins to doze. Nap nuzzling.
fff
This particular professor encouraged me to record my experiences with Ollie in letters written to him. Though I don't keep up this practice as often as I would like to, it has been incredibly helpful in processing my relationship with this little boy. One of my greatest realizations has been recognizing that the caring that occurs within my bond with Ollie does not occur in a vacuum--though I may wish for that at times; it is influenced by--and affects, in turn--other relationships in my life--with my loved ones, with strangers, and with the world around me. What a powerful presence this little guy has!!!
aaa
Perhaps, taking the time for reflection has been influenced by the milestone of my thirtieth birthday in March! Ollie decorated my lovely birthday cake (with a little help from his daddy). The guys gave me the gift of sleeping in that morning while they played with frosting and candles.

My BEAUTIFUL cake, with candles and fingerprints arranged by Ollie.

***Latest words, phrases, and conversation pieces for Ollie: saying "good gracious" and "good grief," "lovebug," talking about the "bees" by the "ladder" (jungle gym), pointing out anything "shiny," and calling his friends by name (esp. Sean, Grace, and Pete). New favorite games: hide and seek, & turning our side table upside-down, standing on it, and either throwing or dropping his egg shaker at the side of his play tent. He announces "throw" or "drop" depending on which action he deems necessary. Very interesting. He's also taken to "balancing" along concrete parking lot markers and the painted parking space lines.
